Tournaments

  • In the interest of inclusivity, tournaments are all mixed-gender.

An important part of these tournaments is that all matches are carried out with the utmost friendliness and respect. Still, if you have any concerns around this, or it discourages you for any reason, please use the contact form above and let us know - we'd really appreciate your input!

  • If there is interest, yes!

Singles is the primary focus, as it tends to have considerably less competitive local opportunities. We will hopefully look into adding doubles tournaments, but you can help enormously by sending us your thoughts on this via the contact form!

  • Only court hire fees, shuttles, and your time!

These are arranged entirely between yourself and an opponent, and should be shared equally. The website will assign one person each match to make the booking (and pay any booking fees), to ensure that everyone has roughly the same amount of responsibility.

The booker should forward the booking reciept (if available) to the other player as soon as possible, who should then bring cash to the match (unless another method is mutually agreed beforehand, ie. PayPal).

Matches

  • We will work towards building up a list of recommended venues, along with important information and costs. Anywhere is acceptable, as long as it has regulation court markings and is mutually agreed upon.

Court time can be quite expensive, depending on the venue. This may be key to whether this tournament concept works for badminton, and is something that we're keen to investigate. As such, we would appreciate any feedback on this matter!

Of course, some club members might have free access to facilities as part of their membership, and may be allowed to bring guests. Please refer to your club's guidance on this.

  • On the My Entries page, you can see your completed matches. Clicking on the 'Actions' button shows the option to 'Dispute Score'.

This will show a box, allowing you to enter the scores as you think they should be, along with some explanation if required. On pressing 'Submit', a message will be sent to your opponent, showing the information you entered. The match will be temporarily updated to show no scores.

Your opponent can choose to accept the revision, in which case the scores are updated and no further action is required. If they decline it, then the issue will be forwarded to the tournament owner to try and resolve the dispute.

Registration

  • All your data will only ever be used for tournament organisational purposes, which may include the odd email providing information, updates, or (very occasionally) asking for feedback.

Your personal data can be deleted on request, however this would naturally prevent you from taking place in any tournaments, until you re-register. We would however normally retain your first name and the initial of your last, only in any existing tournament results. If you have any issues, or questions, please use the contact form to talk to the admin.

    Specific data use:

    • Email: This will be what you use to log into the site, and will recieve notifications of entry, of new matches, and other relevant information. It will also be provided to your opponents in a given pool, and vice-versa, so that you can organise matches together. As such, please monitor your inbox, and if you are worried about privacy, you are welcome to use a non-identifying email address.

    • Password: Naturally this will never be provided to anyone, and we will never ask for it. No plain-text passwords will ever be stored, for security reasons, but none-the-less we advise you to follow best practice and use a strong, unique password for our website.

    • Name: This will be shown in the list of entries to a tournament, as well as the results. It will be only be visible to other logged in users.

  • We apologise if, for any reason, your chosen name doesn't fit in our registration form.

We've designed it this way so that tournament results are displayed in a predictable way. Please feel free to format your name in the given boxes however you see fit, but aim for something relatively easy to read - so that other players have no issues in contacting you.

  • The ability scoring exists entirely as a way to try and create even pools, and matches - since close, hard-fought matches tend to be the most fun for all involved. In this sense it should also be fairer to all abilities who wish to enter.

At the moment it uses some simple, relatively ambiguous options. Pick the one that you think best suits you, and feel free to refer to the very rough definitions below.

Note: Definitions of ability are always going to be half-nonsense, the only important thing is having fun. So take all of this with a grain of salt, and we'll get through just fine.

    Rough definitions:

    • Beginner: Little playing experience, and unfamiliar with the rules/scoring.

    • Improver: Rapidly gaining experience, knows the rules, and can sustain short rallies.

    • Social Player: Varying levels of experience, but generally they would regularly attend club nights (in normal times), can sustain rallies, can play a variety of shots (forehand & backhand) as required, understand basic tactics, and are happy moving around the court to reach shots.

    • Competitive Player: Regularly enjoys close rallies, has a good understanding of tactics and formation, is happy defending against attacking shots, and chooses their shots and placement according to the situation. They will compete in local leagues, or enjoy close games with players that do.

    • Advanced Player: They might play in the higher local league teams, or in county leagues - or be of equivalent standard.

This ability/ranking system is under review. Currently, each of the above options corresponds to an 'ability score' between 1 and 10. These will be modified by actual performance in tournaments, although the algorithm for doing so hasn't been designed yet. Please do bear in mind that the ability score is very arbitrary, and doesn't mean anything really!

As it's under review, it may change later on. Also, your feedback would be very much appreciated!

Website

  • Primarily using the standard combination of HTML, PHP and CSS. It also uses some Javascript for transitions. It is designed with standard security practices in mind.

It was designed using Bootstrap, an open-source CSS framework which encourages responsive, consistent web design.

A Trello board is maintained, listing upcoming development tasks and priorities, view it here.

  • Torneos is Spanish for Tournaments, and the β is because the website is in a beta state (ie. a work in progress). The fact that it can also represent the first initial of Badminton is entirely incidental.

This was chosen because it was felt that a distinctive name was necessary; this may have been a silly decision.
